Evaluation: Modern Family

Wednesday nights on ABC consist of airing one of television's most popular comedies. Modern Family proves to be one of the funniest, feel-good shows that currently run on tv according to critics, and fans across the country. This multiple-season series keeps viewers coming back year after year with its witty humor and relatable characters that make the show so enticing.

The show does a phenomenal job at creating a character for almost everybody to relate to. There is the clueless dad, the strict mom, the gay couple, the angst-y teenage daughter, the Latina woman everyone loves, and many more. By showcasing such a wide variety of personalities, the writers can grasp twice as many viewers as if they had not included some of these people.

Aside from the personalities of each character, the controversy surrounding this show brings viewers as well. One of the main families on the show consists of two fathers and an adopted baby. Clearly, people have problems with this in terms of what is right and wrong. Another extremely touchy topic was surrounding an episode where a young girl (around three years old, I'm assuming), uses a profanity. Of course, most people do not take the time to understand that they did not actually make the girls say the word, they simply had her say a word similar, and proceeded to beep over it anyway. Personally, I see no problem with these topics, as they are all a part of everyday occurrences. I think it is a positive thing that popular shows are beginning to push the boundaries with their content. It not only makes it more interesting, but teaches lessons on important topics.

  1. I found your evaluation to be well done, i too enjoy watching Modern Family and own a few of the seasons on dvd and watch them constantly at dinner time with my family.

What i would like to contribute to this evaluation is to expand upon the possible causes of controversy that continues to plague the show to this very day. The primary issue, which you have already successfully stated, is the two father and adopted baby family that plays a prominent role in the series. while any reference to homosexuality is sure to provoke a response with viewers, another controversial family does not get as much recognition. You would not think that a mixed raced family would garner much ire in this day and age, but regardless, there presence still managed to generate a slew of racist attention to the show. Finally, more controversy surrounds the oldest daughter of the main family of the show. While she is meant to represent the stereotypical teenage girl in her actions, her rebellious and promiscuous behavior drew the attention of families who thought that such behavior was completely unacceptable for a girl of her age. resulting in yet more people protesting the shows current content.

  2. I myself watch Modern Family religiously on Wednesday nights. When I am home with my family watching we can all relate to the social issues that take place in the show. We can even name a few people who we think this show reminds us of. It is true that this show created many characters that are admirable to viewers. With the wide variety of personalities this obviously creates a conflict every episode. This show does touch on some topics that dynamic families across America experience. Although the issues and situations that take place on the show are controversial, more issues could arise from them. The two fathers who are homosexual decided to adopt an Asian baby. This seems to be popular all over the U.S. with celebrities. People watching the show could wonder why there isn’t an African American baby, or one of the parents could be different cultured.
Some people who watch this show might find it inaccurate or offensive. This show does try to cover general stereotypes of humans in different stages of life. Some teenagers who watch the show might laugh or just find it offensive because annoying things they actually do are represented on national televisions on Wednesday nights.

  3. Personally, I have never seen Modern Family but I have heard of it. Your evaluation does make me feel like I am missing out because your description of it makes it sound like such a great show. I love shows that are extremely funny and perhaps this Wednesday night I will try to get a glimpse of this show that everyone claims to be hilarious. I do wish you had been more descriptive as to what the other family members are like and the situations they are often found in but at the same time I am glad you did not spoil it. This gives me more of a reason to watch it to find out what the other family members are like and the other things that goes on within the family. I know the profanity-speaking child, and the gay couple probably does bring a lot of controversy but I think different shows are for different people. I personally would not find that offensive and I think it sounds like a pretty funny show. Very good evaluation, I really hope to watch this show soon in order to see what the commotion is all about.

  4. Many viewers dislike the show because it is known to be offensive and insulting. For example: the gay couple. In many religions, it is consider to be a sin if you are homosexual. With that being said, many people follow their religion’s guidelines and will claim that being homosexual is morally wrong. Because the show made a homosexual couple as a part of their cast, many religious viewers will refuse to watch the show.
As some viewers may find “Modern Family” to be insulting and very offensive, no one can ignore the truth; this is how today’s society is. Whether the viewers like it or not, there are homosexual couples and many of them do adopt children, there are clueless parents in the world, there are children that use profanity, and there are interracial relationships (for example: the Latina woman and the dad). The world is changing and that is what the show is trying to convey.
One reason why the show is so successful is because it is relatable. There is a variety of people on the show like the Latina woman, the teenagers, the strict mom, the clueless dad, the gay people; just like the variety of people in the world. The show attracts many different audiences because of that as well.

  5. I have only seen a few episodes of Modern Family. Of what i saw it was very humorous, and does have everything a typical family has. As for the topics that you talked about being a little controversial, I believe that these are things that some families can relate too. Other families or individuals may take offense to these topics, and maybe see it as conveying the wrong message for the American family life. But then again, shows like these need the scenes such as the young child using profanity to add much needed humor to the show.Everyone knows that this is not something that should be occurring during a child growing up, but things like this happen and many people can relate to it. If they cannot relate to it they should still be able to view it as humor and realize it is not trying to send the message that profanity is acceptable for someone of that age, or anyone in that matter

  6. I commented on this post because I love Modern Family. It is one of my favorite shows and I used to watch it every Wednesday with my family. I am a Japanese adoptee and my sister is a Korean adoptee. My parents are white and we joke at how “traditional” our family is. We usually have exchange students and have had kids from places like France, Brazil, China, Thailand, Germany and many more. Today, the household consists of my parents and sister, a partner of a friend, an ex girlfriend of a former exchange student and my old babysitter. I love Modern Family because it asks “what is a family?” Is it people who all look the same but despise each other? Or is it a collection of people who truly love each other for who they are? I agree that it tackles issues that are controversial in American society and believe it is in line with the new line of thinking in America. Being gay is not embarrassing anymore and families that adopt are seen like any other family. Race is another issue that Modern Family tackles. Gloria, the hot Latin mom who has a strong accent, is married to the older Jay. There is an episode in which Jay’s daughter calls Gloria a “Gold Digger”. This issue is very prominent in some households but the family always gets back together. Even though the family fights over issues that are prevalent in American society, they all love each other.

  7. The main reason why I'm commenting on this post is because Modern Family is my current favorite television show on the air. Every Wednesday night, I turn on ABC to watch this hilarious comedy. This show helps remind everyone that there is no typical family. One reason why people find it so funny is because they can find a character in the show that they can relate to their own family. There are some conflicts that this show creates; however, it doesn't really matter at the end of the day because this is one popular and profitable television show. There are people who probably don't like that there is a gay couple on the show, but it doesn't affect the show's popularity one bit. The diversity of this family, from the gay couple who adopt a child to Gloria, the Latin mom who marries a much older white man, draws viewers to see that a family isn't just a typical and traditional family.
